Choose Your Mate Wisely
By Mark Aites God warned the children of Israel concerning heathen nations, “You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them…” (Deut. 7:2b-3a). Time and again warnings are reiterated to keep people from marrying someone that would cause them to turn against God. Many times Christians are far too careless in their relationships. If a Christian chooses someone of the world, it is an invitation for trouble. Ezra saw this in his day, and was so upset that his own brethren would foolishly intermarry with their heathen neighbors, that he tore his clothes and pulled out his hair (Ezra 9:3). The godly man was shocked that his people knowingly and willingly went ahead and intermarried in defiance to God. What is sad is that in Ezra’s day it was not something new. That prohibition had been around for almost a thousand years (Deut. 7). It wasn’t as though there was an adequate excuse for this kind of behavior. People get angry today when warnings are given over marrying someone who does not know God. They often hope that after they are married they can bring this person to Christ. An age old illustration says it best: you take two people, one standing on a table and one standing on the floor. It is easier to pull the one down from the table than the one from the floor up onto the table. So it is in relationships, it is easier to pull someone down and away from God than for you to pull them up and away from the world. If you desire to marry, make sure that the one you choose is someone who loves God and will help you get to heaven. Anything short of that is a recipe for disaster.
